It is correct that you do not have to use your license number on your drivers license as an ID number, rather you can have a random number chosen.  But, you do have to show a social security number to apply for the drivers license.

  Candie................  For  quite some time ss# have not been required on the driver's license. I ,matter of fact, have had another number per my request for at least 4 yrs instead of my soc. sec.#.  Did I understand your email correctly?  Rosalie Pavlis
