We are finding the same problem with our younger GED students who are not
focused and are disruptive to the more serious older student. Our plan at this
time is to pull these students out of class (on a single night-an hour) and form
an informal focus group so that we may gather information regarding their
motivation in attending the program as well as their expectations. I believe the
younger students are more ready for the exam, but lack direction and realistic
goals. It also appears that it is this group who expects immediate
gratification-a GED right away. Not so much the older students who have been away from
the academic world for awhile. I also believe that the younger students are
being told incorrect information from parents and guidance offices. It behooves
us to be in communication with all the area High Schools for better information
dissemination.I will certainly share any pearls of wisdom once garnered from
this group. Rosalie Pavlis
