One-Book Holyoke 2008 kicks off its 8-week long city-wide reading 
program with an evening of readings and discussion based on /When I Was 
Puerto Rican/, this year?s One-Book Holyoke selection. Featured speakers 
will include representatives from throughout the community: *Roberto* 
*Márquez*, scholar, author and editor from Mount Holyoke College; 
*Natalia Muñoz*, editor of /La Prensa/ newspaper; *Maria Pagan*, 
director of the Holyo ke Public Library; *Yolanda Robles*, Hampden 
County?s 2004 Literacy Champion; *Irma Medina*, coordinator of Holyoke 
Community College?s Pathways Program; *Rhonda Soto* of Class Action and 
youth from the *Teen Resource Project*. Light refreshments will be 
provided. Copies of /When I Was Puerto Rican/ will be available for 
purchase.

/One-Book Holyoke/ is a city-wide reading program in which everyone is 
invited to read the same book, and to build connections and community 
through literature and literacy. One-Book Holyoke actively reaches out 
to new and experienced readers to create a fun and educational project 
that crosses race, class, educational and economic lines.

*This year's /One-Book Holyoke/ selection is _When I Was Puerto Rican_ 
by Esmeralda Santiago. Our overall theme is "Coming to the USA."*

During our 8-week reading period (March 11-April 30) /One-Book Holyoke/

encourage reflection and conversation relating to and inspired by the 
book. Some of our events will include films, panel discussions, reading 
groups, community celebrations, dramatic readings, and more.

written word, will host a series of events celebrating Esmeralda 
Santiago?s moving and illuminating memoir _When I Was Puerto Rican_/:

    * Tuesday, March 11, 7 p.m. ? OFF THE PAGE at Wistariahurst Museum.
      One-Book Holyoke ?08 kicks off with an evening of readings and
      panel discussion based on _When I Was Puerto Rican_. Featured

      PA?QUE TU LO SEPAS, at Holyoke Public Library. This movie
      chronicles actress and filmmaker Rosie Perez's witty and
      enlightening quest to rediscover her Puerto Rican culture. Light

    * Tuesday, March 25, 7 p.m. - Adio kerida (gOODBYE DEAR LOVE), at
      Holyoke Community College, Kittredge Room 301. One?Book Holyoke
      and the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival co-host a viewing of
      ADIO KERIDA, in which anthropologist Ruth Behar returns to her
      native Cuba to profile the island?s remaining Sephardic Jews and
      chronicle her family?s journey to the U.S. as Cuban-Jewish exiles.

      dedicated teacher inspires his dropout-prone, Hispanic students to
      learn calculus to build up their self-esteem. They do so well that

    * Thursday, April 10, 7 p.m. THE BALLAD OF A MIGRANT FARMWORKER: A
      Film Screening at Holyoke Public Library. This 28-minute film by
      Wil Echevarria and co-produced by WGBY-TV Springfield will be

    * Tuesday, April 15, 7 p.m. COME READ WITH US, One-Book Holyoke
      Discussion Group, at Barnes and Noble, Holyoke Crossing. Everyone
      is welcome to come and discuss _When I Was Puerto Rican_ by
      Esmeralda Santiago. Light refreshments will be served.

    * Thursday April 17, 6 p.m. * note new time * WRITING A LIFE, at
      Holyoke Public Library. This documentary film offers a portrait of
      Esmeralda Santiago, author of _When I Was Puerto Rican_. The film
      reveals how her ground-breaking memoirs have a transforming impact
      on the lives of people she meets face to face?in bookstores,
      universities, urban schools, family shelters, libraries, prisons,

    * Monday April 28, 10:30 a.m., STORIES FROM THE ISLAND, at
      Wistariahurst Museum, 238 Cabot St. A local intergenerational
      story-gathering program will culminate in this presentation by
      young mothers from The Care Center and the older residents they
      interviewed to collect stories of migration and cultural
      transplantation.

    * Wednesday April 30, 5:30-9:30 p.m., A LITERARY FIESTA-AUTHOR VISIT
      & CELEBRATION, LOCATION TBA. Celebrate One-Book Holyoke and our
      honored guest, Esmeralda Santiago, author of _When I Was Puerto
      Rican_, for a community meal, author reading, book signing and
      evening of music and dance from the island at this celebration of
      literature and community.
