In this 2-part interactive workshop, participants will learn about the laws that govern the workplace and the rights that protect workers' health, safety and security.  The workshop is designed for ABE and ESOL instructors who are interested in addressing these topics in their classes, but who are unfamiliar with the laws.  The facilitators are from the statewide University of Massachusetts Labor Extension Program, which has developed an eleven module participatory course on workers' rights, in both English and Spanish.  Workshop participants will receive a copy of the full curriculum at the workshop.

 

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

·        Name state and federal laws that govern work and workplace issues, including safety and health issues

·        Access additional information about these laws, including major provisions, scope and remedies offered

·        Identify which laws are the most relevant to the concerns of their students

·        Use and adapt the UMass Labor Extension Program's Workers' Rights Curriculum to teach classes on workers' rights to their ABE/ESOL students

·        Identify challenges to using workplace issues and laws as classroom topics, and generate possible solutions
