More Than Preparing for the GED: Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension

Are your pre-GED and GED students becoming critical readers? What are the components of reading instruction that enables ABE students to attain reading skills and strategies for fluency and critical comprehension? How are these strategies for fluency applied in the reading tasks needed for schooling, work and life at home or in the community? Recent theory development and research into reading competencies among adult learners has resulted in new and dynamic evidence-based instructional design. This workshop will give an overview of these developments and provide opportunities for teachers to integrate new reading instructional approaches into their teaching practice.

Date: Friday, April 11, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at HCC, Kittredge Center, Room 222

Presenter: Sally Gabb, Developmental Reading Specialist at Bristol Community College. Sally is the former SABES Director for the Southeast Region. She has more than 30 years experience with Adult Basic Education, as an instructor, educational program director and professional developer. She holds a CAGS in adult developmental reading.
