One-Book  Holyoke Presents…

Please Join Us:
Thursday April 17, 6 p.m., WRITING A LIFE, at the Holyoke Public Library. FREE! The popcorn is on us :)

Writing a Life is documentary film portrait of best-selling author, Esmeralda Santiago in the midst of a culture-sharing journey. Her ground breaking memoirs, When I Was Puerto Rican, Almost A Woman and The Turkish Lover have a transforming impact on the lives of people she meets face to face in book stores, universities, urban schools, family shelters, libraries, prisons, and projects. This film captures the irrepressible charisma of a woman who is willing to do whatever it takes to open up debates on race, culture and identity. Dreaming in Spanish, writing in English, Ms. Santiago shares the joy and sorrow of living between two cultures. ONE-BOOK HOLYOKE FILM SERIES

ABOUT One-Book Holyoke

One-Book Holyoke is a city-wide reading program in which everyone is invited to read the same book, and to build connections and community through literature and literacy. One-Book Holyoke actively reaches out to new and experienced readers to create a fun and educational project that crosses race, class, educational, and economic lines.

This year's One-Book Holyoke selection is When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago. Our overall theme is "Coming to the USA."

During our 8-week reading period (March 11-April 30) One-Book Holyoke invites the public to a series of events (see schedule below) that will encourage reflection and conversation relating to and inspired by the book. Some of our events will include films, panel discussions, reading groups, community celebrations, dramatic readings, and more.
