Effective Partnerships is an excellent entry point for those interested 
in how to start the process of applying for workplace education funding. 
The Massachusetts Worker Education Roundtable are the experts in this field.

Thinking about getting involved in workplace education? In this two-part 
workshop, we will explore the many different reasons for offering 
workplace education, and how your program can market workplace education 
services to employers, unions and workers. We'll review workplace 
education funding sources in Massachusetts, identify methods and 
resources for researching potential employer and union partners, and 
discuss what makes a good partner. We will discuss how to deal with 
employer and union expectations, and we'll role play making the first 
pitch to a potential employer or union partner.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
+ Define what workplace education is and identify reasons for offering 
workplace education programs.
+ Identify workplace education funding sources in Massachusetts, 
especially DOE/ACLS workplace education grants.
+ Analyze potential employer and/or union partner perceptions and 
expectations for workplace education, and employer / union cultures.
+ Develop criteria and identify types of employer and/or union partners 
where workplace education is needed and appropriate.
+ Identify methods and resources for researching potential employer 
and/or union partners.
+ Develop presentations/arguments for potential employer and/or union 
partners for offering workplace education.

Connie Nelson, Director
As director of the Roundtable since 1995, Connie has concentrated on 
providing basic skills for employed workers. She has a B.A. in Adult 
Training and Development from University of Massachusetts at Boston and 
Ed.M and Ed.D. degrees in Community Education and Lifelong Learning from 
Harvard University. Her research focused on sustainability of workplace 
learning programs. She has presented at numerous conferences and taught 
in professional development programs for workplace educators. She is 
President of the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education and serves 
on the Massachusetts Workforce Alliance and several policy boards and 
committees.

Jenny Utech, Training and Curriculum Coordinator
Jenny developed and wrote the Roundtable's Workplace Educator Training 
Manual, which is based on the experiences of teachers in the Roundtable 
network. She has also developed and taught professional development 
courses in Workplace Education for SABES, the System for Adult Basic 
Education Support in Massachusetts and has presented at conferences 
locally and nationally. She has a B.A. from Williams College and a M.A. 
from Harvard University.

Southwick Hall Room 240 is located on the North Campus.

Directions to UMASS Lowell North Campus:

Traveling North on Route 3:

Take exit 30B to the Lowell Connector and follow the directions below.


Traveling South on Route 3:

Take exit 30A for I-495 North. Immediately take exit 35C for the Lowell 
Connector. Follow the directions below.

Traveling on I-495 North or South:
Take exit 35C to the Lowell Connector. Follow the directions below.
 
To UMass Lowell North from the Lowell Connector
 From the Connector, take Exit 5B onto Thorndike St. After four traffic 
lights (1/2 mile), Thorndike St. bears right and becomes Dutton St. 
Continue on Dutton St. about 1/2 mile to Merrimack Street by City Hall. 
Proceed straight onto Arcand Drive. At the end of Arcand Drive, the 
Tsongas Arena is straight ahead.

Turn left at the traffic light onto Morissette Blvd. Wannalancit Mills 
is one block on the right.

Proceed to the second light at Aiken Street. UML East, Lelacheur Ball 
Park and the Campus Recreation Center are on the right.

On Morissette Blvd., continue to the third light and turn right onto the 
University Ave Bridge. Once across the bridge, UMass Lowell North is on 
either side of the road.

Visitor Parking: Visitors to the University may park in the Pleasant St. 
lot on UML North without the need for a decal or hang-tag. Visitor 
parking permits are required for all other lots.  Visitor's that have 
already arrived on UML North should park in one of the visitor spots 
between Ball and Pinanski and then go to the Police Dispatch Office in 
Ball Hall, with their vehicle registration to obtain a permit.
