Come and learn from the experiences of two educators who developed the ALC to BCC for ME program in Pittsfield, MA.
ALC to BCC for ME (the Adult Learning Center to Berkshire Community College for My Education program) is a college transitions program based in the ABE / ESOL classroom. It bridges the gap between ABE programs and college-based transitions programs by taking learners through a 6-part curriculum that begins with the concept of college and includes units on various features of the college experience, such as selecting degree and certificate programs, and understanding the course schedule guide, syllabi, and financial aid forms. It is essentially a transition to transitions program, and has been very successful in introducing ABE learners to college and preparing them for the ABE-to-College Transitions program.
The workshop will present some background information on the development of the ALC to BCC for ME curriculum; explore the challenges ABE students face with the concept of college and ideas for helping them overcome these challenges; allow participants to experience the 6-unit curriculum through some hands-on activities; and provide an opportunity to adapt the ALC to BCC for ME model to their own students/classroom/program.
Through the workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Identify initial steps ABE learners need to take in order to prepare for college
2. Examine specific classroom lessons and activities through which the ALC to BCC for ME program has helped learners take initial steps to college
3. Begin to develop curriculum ideas and lessons into their own ABE program that will help their learners transition to college
