Workshop Title: ABE Math/Numeracy Licensure-Compatible Course
Dates: Saturdays: March 3, 10, 17, 31, April 7, 28
Time: 9:30am - 3:00 pm
(Six 5-hour sessions with homework, plus a 15-hour practicum)

Course Description:
This is a statewide licensure-compatible course intended for anyone who is teaching math in ABE or who is working towards the ABE teacher licensure. The course is comprised of six 5-hour sessions and a 15-hour practicum. The practicum involves developing and writing up a detailed math lesson plan, which the participant then implements and reports upon to the facilitator. Additional assignments are required between sessions.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
LO I: Describe at least 3 characteristics of adult mathematics (numeracy) learners and their individual experiences and how these learner factors affect teaching and learning.
LO II: Describe at least 3 mathematical demands connected with various adult learner goals for numeracy.
LO III: Articulate at least two mathematical learning theories and their connection to adult learning and teacher practice.
LO IV: Summarize data from at least two research studies or professional articles in the area of mathematics education, particularly adult mathematics education.
LO V: Summarize the math content and learning in each of the four content strands of the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework for Adult Basic Education.
LO VI: Demonstrate an understanding of a variety of adult education classroom environments and how the role of teacher as facilitator must adapt within those environments.
LO VII: Demonstrate a variety of standards-based methods and strategies for teaching mathematics content and concepts and problem-solving in the adult basic education classroom.
LO VIII: Demonstrate an understanding of multiple methods and techniques for initial assessment, monitoring progress and adjusting instruction, and providing evidence of achievement of learner goals and learning standards in the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework for Adult Basic Education.
LO IX: Demonstrate the ability to plan and write a standards-based lesson or curriculum unit with assessment and content consonant with Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework for Adult Basic Education.
LO X: Demonstrate the ability to reflect upon, learn from and improve their teaching by writing a professional development plan that identifies essential content, skills, and habits of mind that they wish to further develop in themselves and in their practice.
Presenter:
Esther Leonelli, Saint John Street Associates, Jamaica Plain, MA. Esther is an educational consultant with close to twenty years experience in adult mathematics education. She currently teaches pre-college math and science in the TechSMART program at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston. Her experience includes teaching math and numeracy to ABE/Pre-GED/GED and ESOL learners in Cambridge, South Boston, Canton, and Somerville as well as providing workshops for teachers statewide, regionally in New England, and nationally. She is the regional representative of the Adult Numeracy Network, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Esther moderates the ANN Numeracy list, an electronic discussion list for adult education practitioners (numeracy at worldstd.com).
