NEW STAFF ORIENTATION
FALL 2007

DATES:                 Five sessions - Attendance at all five sessions is required

                             Thursday Evenings:  Oct. 4, 11, 18 and Nov. 1, and 8         

TIME:                   5:00 - 8:30  (Half hour dinner break.  Dinner will be provided)

This 15-hour orientation offers a broad introduction to the field of adult basic education.  You should attend this training if you have worked in an adult education program for less than one year or if you have never received a comprehensive introduction to adult education.  Through these highly interactive sessions you will:
 

·        Gain an understanding of the many facets and issues of literacy, adult learners, and adult education

·        Understand how teaching and learning with adults is different from working with children

·        Explore many effective approaches to working with adult learners

·        Understand what learning disabilities are and how they impact your students and your practice

·        Examine the ABE and ESOL Curriculum Frameworks and learn how to use them in your teaching practice

·        Explore goal-setting, lesson-planning and assessment

·        Access teaching and learning resources, including books, videos and technology

·        Learn about SABES and other ABE teacher support services

·        Meet, share, network and learn with colleagues

·        Develop a staff development plan to enhance your teaching

 

PDP's (Professional Development Points) are available for this workshop.  In order to receive PDP's full attendance and completion of all assignments are required.
