Exploring the Bridges to Practice Model: Basic LD
April 25, 2007
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
at Holyoke Community College's Kittredge Business Center - Room 203
Nicole Graves and Michelle Faith Brown present this "primer" on Learning Disabilities (LD) for ABE teachers, counselors and ADA coordinators new to the field...or those just realizing they might need more information to better serve their students/clients.
This 5-hour workshop will provide an overview of the Bridges to Practice Project and how it can serve as a model for ongoing support for programs and services to persons with learning disabilities.
During the last 45-minutes of this training, Massachusetts ADA Coordinator Jackie Fletcher will provide an overview of the American Disabilities Act and focus on legal rights, program responsibilities, resources and supports, assistive technology, and innovative teaching tools and techniques.
By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
a.. Identify 2 indicators of LD;
b.. Explain 2-3 differences between a diagnosis and a screening;
c.. Name and explain 2 LD-appropriate methods for teaching students with LD;
d.. State and explain how ADA legislation impacts their classroom and learners;
e.. Name different stakeholders for system change; and
f.. Name 2-3 responsibilities of the ADA coordinator in Massachsuetts' ABE programs;
g.. Know what is legally required of ABE programs to be in compliance with the ADA; and
h.. Know why the ADA Checklist Review is used as at tool to help ensure ABE programs are accessible and that policies and practices are inclusive.
Don't let the time commitment deter you.
It's 5 hours well spent if it helps you understand LD a little bit better.
