Actors to bring Holocaust memoir off the page
One-Book Holyoke continues April 17, with a dramatic reading and discussion of Night

HOLYOKE — One-Book Holyoke, a community-wide reading program, continues on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m., when actors from Enchanted Circle Theater will offer a dramatic reading and moderated discussion of the Holocaust memoir, Night by Elie Wiesel. The event, which will take place at Open Square, 1 Open Square Way, will also feature refreshments provided by young entrepreneurs from Youthbridge Solutions, CDC.

The text will be brought to life by a group of professional actors including Priscilla Kane Hellweg, artistic director of Enchanted Circle Theater; singer, songwriter and Shakespearean actor Greg Alexander; and Joshua Perlstein, theatre professor at Central Connecticut State College. Enchanted Circle Theater is a non-profit, professional educational theater company dedicated to engaging, enhancing and inspiring learning through the arts.

Night the classic Holocaust memoir, is this year’s One-Book Holyoke selection. Discussions, a film screening, a dramatic reading and a talk by a Holocaust refugee are among the events scheduled during the 8-week reading period to encourage readers to reflect on the themes and questions raised by the book.

While reaching out to the city as a whole, One-Book Holyoke also targets adult new readers including immigrants and adults who are returning to school for basic literacy skills.

One-Book Holyoke is a grassroots program in which everyone in the city is invited to read a single title. With The Care Center as the lead agency, the project also has as its collaborators: The Holyoke Public Schools, Juntos Adult Basic Education Collaborative/HPS and Pathways to Family Success/HPS, Career Point/HCC Adult Learning Center, Holyoke Community College/Sabes West, Nueva Esperanza, Holyoke Public Library and the Friends of the Holyoke Public Library and Enchanted Circle Theater.
