Serious fun: Oppositional thinking in adult basic education
Discover how exploring sets of oppositions can add PRACTICAL YET FUN
activities to your classroom while stimulating students' creative and
critical thinking skills!
Learn how thinking in paradoxes, oppositions, and metaphors can be
valuable to both teachers and students in ABE programs!
When – Thursday, August 24, 2006 from 09:00 am to 03:00 pm
Where – Northeast SABES - 45 Franklin Street - Lawrence, MA
Presenter – Matthew Puma is Vice-President of CWL – Creative Workplace
Learning – located in Watertown, MA. He teaches workplace ABE in central
Massachusetts. Last October, Matt presented a shorter version of this
workshop at the MCAE Network 2005 conference in Marlborough.
This interactive and engaging workshop develops the use of oppositional
thinking in the context of ABE, with a more theoretical focus on
educator practice and a very practical focus on stimulating classroom
activities. The workshop is geared toward adult educators working with
advanced ESOL, Secondary Alternative Diploma or GED, and Job Preparation
programs.
As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will be able to:
+ Describe examples of creative and critical thinking (e.g., thinking in
paradoxes, oppositions, and metaphors);
+ Explain how oppositional thinking provides a practical framework for
developing stimulating classroom activities;
+ Apply critical thinking with oppositions to enhance writing and
critical thinking skills;
+ Identify the many rich contradictory pulls in the teacher/student
relationship;
+Assist learners with a constructive approach to understanding their own
personal transitions; and,
+ Apply principals of oppositional thinking to their ABE classroom teaching.
Sounds academic but it will be a hoot!
