SABES West is pleased to announce that Alexis Johnson and Caroline Gear of
The International Language Insitute will be facilitating a two-part
workshop, "Effective ESOL Practices." Below is the information, which is
also included in the attachment. Please contact me directly with any
questions.

Please join us for this two-part training. Part One looks at how people
learn and how we, as teachers, use this knowledge to design effective
English classes. To this end, participants will examine their own learning
styles through a "shock language" experience, examine the cornerstones of an
effective language learning environment, look at lesson planning and take
away some practical ideas that they can use in the classroom immediately.
Part Two will apply conclusions from the first workshop to integrated
activities that combine speaking, reading, writing ad listening, as well as
grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and a cultural component. Participants
will examine materials and create others to support a learner-centered
environment. (It is not necessary to attend both sessions, but is
preferable.)

This workshop is intended for teachers who are new to the field or who would
like to look at their teaching through a different lens.

Dates: Part One: Friday, September 15, 2006 from 10 – 4 at HCC, Room G221.

Part Two: Friday, November 3, 2006 from 10 – 4 p.m. at HCC, Kittredge 314

Presenters: Alexis Johnson, Executive Director of the International Language
Institute of Massachusetts, Inc. (Northampton) and Caroline Gear, Director
of Programs at the International Language Institute of Massachusetts, Inc.
