Two interesting reports on Massachusetts communities - a research study on the economic impact of the nonprofit sector in the community and an initiative 'to bring high quality business consulting services to low-income entrepreneurs ' - from the Drucker Foundation/Leader to Leader Institute.

(2) HOW MUCH DO NONPROFITS CONTRIBUTE TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY?

A study sponsored by the Non-Profit Alliance (NPA) of Greater Lowell Massachusetts found that 155 nonprofits in 10 local communities added $447 million into the regional

economy in 2000. An earlier study by Eureka-Boston estimated that Boston-area community-based nonprofits earned $2.5 billion in income and spent over $850 million on personnel in 2000.

"Most of us who do nonprofit work don't think of our important impact on the economy," said NPA member Victoria Fahlberg, director of the ONE Lowell Coalition, an umbrella organization representing 12 immigrant groups. "Nonetheless, together we employ a large number of people whose purchasing power significantly impacts the local economy."

COLLABORATION PROFILE: URBAN BUSINESS ALLIANCE

In a unique approach to boosting business growth in Massachusetts cities, Pioneer Institute and State Street Corporation have partnered on a major initiative to bring high quality business consulting services to low-income entrepreneurs. The collaborative effort, known as the Urban Business Alliance, is aimed at helping low-income entrepreneurs by bolstering the skills of the community-based business advisors that provide assistance.

The Urban Business Alliance has also enlisted the expertise of the Entrepreneurial Management Institute at Boston University to create specialized training in business consulting practices. Instructors from local graduate business schools will develop and deliver the curriculum, and volunteer staff from local financial institutions will provide a follow-up, one-on-one program designed to strengthen the ties between financial institutions and small business assistance programs.
