<P><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">One hundred and forty-seven Community Technology Center (CTC) grants will go to state and local providers in 44 states, as well as Puerto </FONT><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Times New Roman">Rico</FONT><FONT FACE="Times New Roman"> and the Virgin Islands, OVAE officials announced today. Grants leverage state and local resources to expand access to information technology for disadvantaged students and adults in economically distressed urban and rural communities. See attached list of winners selected from over 1200 applications for the one-year grants. The future of the program is still undecided pending agreement by Capitol Hill and the White House on several options proposed.</FONT></P>
<P><B><FONT COLOR="#0000FF" SIZE=4 FACE="Arial">Youth Trend</FONT></B>

<P><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">Reports that numbers of young learners ages 16-18 are increasing rapidly in our programs are not reflected in the national trend data, a recent DAEL analysis shows. Since we started tracking this cohort, in place of 16-24 year olds, the trend has been flat. In 1998, for example 466,592 learners ages 16-18 enrolled in our programs. By 2000, there were 465,967. Analysts believe the trend may be concentrated in particular states and localities. If you have state or local information you want to share, contact your Area Coordinator.</FONT></P>

<P><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">Morehead State University (MSU) is seeking candidates for the position of Director, Adult Education Academy for Professional Development. The Director will supervise three full-time staff members including an instructional designer, a professional development specialist, and a secretary. <P><FONT FACE="Times New Roman">The Starbucks Foundation recently awarded the Ohio Literacy Resource Center (OLRC) $5,000 for a family literacy partnership with Stark County Even Start and two county Starbucks stores. The projects include Family Fun Nights for Even Start families at two Starbucks locations. Participants get backpacks with books, writing materials, and take-home activities. Starbucks provides coffee and hot chocolate to participants. Partners will establish a local campaign to raise money to give Even Start students books for their homes. The OLRC will create paper "Book Bucks" to be purchased by Starbucks customers and hung in each store. Contact OLRC at 800/765-2897.</FONT><B></B><B></B></P>
