<For example, have you used the method of teaching that one of the subscribers
wrote about? If you did, why did it work better for you personally?>

< ,Isn't it about time that we change the way we treat adult educational
programs focused on teaching beginning literacy skills?>

I agree. I have made many suggestions in my program but none have been taken
seriously.
More understanding and sensitivity is needed to teach adults with LD's.

< 2) I'd very much like to hear your opinion as to how you feel all these
traumatic experiences affected your ability to >learn<! Wow! Did
you go through a lot of them in your lifetime. Thank you so much for baring
your soul about them. >

Going through trauma was a challenge and still is. Finding the proper help
can get you through it. I shared only part of the traumas that happened
to me. I was totally frustrated and angry many times.

You need to realize that you need help to get past the traumas, focus on
something positive to relate to, in order to build self confidence. Teach
in a non threatening way. Let the student guide the professional through
his/her needs. Do not give too many suggestions at one time. If the student
feels overwhelmed he or she will not learn and most of the times he or she
will drop out.

Just remember that you cannot know how this person is feeling, so don't act
as if you do. One of the mistakes most professionals make is saying, "I
know how you feel", but you don't know, because you haven't lived it. Trauma
is very hard to diagnose without professional help. I have read many books
on psychology and especially trauma, to help me learn more.

< 3) Were you ever given a "break", a "time out" or something similar
by a program when you were going through one of the traumatic times you listed?
Some programs have policies they enforce due to Learner Waiting Lists - did
yours? >

I was not given a break or timeout. When I first entered the program there
was not much guidance from staff to guide the tutors. During this time I
was seeing different counselors to help understand what I was feeling and
what I needed to learn. My Christian counselor realize that I could not focus
on learning and suggested that I take some time out from the program.

I would like to share the method I used with my counselors and the support
groups. A psychologist helped me understand about my traumatic brain injury
and how the brain works to process. Once I understood that a little bit I
was able to make sense of my traumatic brain injury. *I had another counselor
to deal with my spiritual needs. *I had Christian counseling and marriage
counseling for my divorce which used scriptures to understand positive
views for my life. *I had a conventional counselor to deal with my anger
management, but it made me angrier and more traumatized because he did not
understand that I had a brain injury and did not know how to treat without
using medications. *I attended 3 support groups that dealt. with traumatic
brain injury. We dealt with the same issues as above but the most important
thing is that we shared common needs. We were not singled out or made to
feel uncomfortable and we could speak our minds with no limits and with a
sensitivity that I never had experienced before.

The policy for learners was non-existent the first time I entered the program,
but as I became involved with the program as a board member we made policies
very similar to ones expressed here in the NLA discussion group. I agree
that you need to be as sensitive as possible so as not to further traumatize
students seeking help.

< 4) Do you feel that break helped you get back to learning again on
a more "full-throttle" basis when you returned to your program? >

I needed more than one break because of issues that I needed to work through.
The forth time I entered the program I was ready to learn. As I shared
in my posting, I had a reason to learn, which was writing to my children.
In 2000 I set a new goal, which was to start writing my autobiography. I
finished most of it and I would like to publish it, if I can find a publisher.

<5) Which brings me to whether your current Tutor has been the only Tutor
you have had throughout your time with the New York LVA - that versus being
assigned omeone new?>

Our program has a specific matching program in which the student is matched
with a tutor who can give the most benefits to the student. My first tutor
had no knowledge of LD's and I was not able to focus with her.

My second tutor knew about LD's but I felt that she was holding me back.

My third tutor was a college student and she was to young and inexperience
to deal with my challenges.

My present tutor is very sensitive to my needs and understands that I have
short-term recall memory problems. (I cannot remember from one minute to
the next. Sometimes I must repeat an function more than once so I can remember.
I must write many reminders and I have a tool that I call my "memory book"
with me at all times.) Repetition has helped me immensely. I have used computer
technology as a tool to help with my short term recall memory problems.

<Thanks again, Harry. Besides the NLA? Your story will mean a >lot<
to the learners you shared it with at your website. On >their< behalf,
I say THANK YOU! >

I do agree that sharing our difficulties can help students who have similar
problems learn new skills and move on with life and help them realize that
they are not alone. Many students have shared thousands and thousands of
stories with me and we all have one common goal which is: be honest with
us and allow us to share our stories in a non threatening way. That's why
I set up a student section on my website for students to share their accomplishments.
I feel that students need someone to relate to as a friend.

Thank you for allowing me to share my opinions and concerns.

P.S. I will post this post on My Personal Discussion Board Open Forum for
students to read and contribute there challenge in life.
