Young US Workers'
Literacy Trails Foreign
Counterparts'

A shortfall in basic literacy skills--especially among America's younger
workers--is likely to intensify as the US economy picks up again, says a new
study by the Educational Testing Service. The US also has the largest skills
gap between highly and poorly educated adults among 17 industrialized
countries surveyed, the study finds. The research is based on data from the
2000 International Adult Literacy Survey. The study suggests the US may fall
even farther behind as young workers replace older and better-prepared
workers. That is, unless adult education and training can turn the trend
around. See study at http://www.ets.org or http://www.businessweek.com for a
February 25 feature based on the study.

NV Certifies Adult Ed
Teacher Competencies

Nevada recently announced a new adult education teacher certification system
based on demonstrated competence--including performance in the classroom or
tutoring environment. The Adult Basic Educator's Certificate of Performance
is based on teachers' achieving outcomes that support the Nevada State Plan
for adult education and/or individual federally funded program objectives.
Participation is voluntary. During the previous two years or within the past
ten classes, teachers must achieve 40% student retention and meet one of the
following outcomes: CASAS gains; GED completions; or program grant
objectives. The first 100 successful applicants receive a one-time award of
$100 through June 30, 2004. Check this out at
http://www.literacynet.org/nevada For Nevada teachers only.
