CA Wins More
EL/Civics Staff
California has tied down funds for five new staff positions to handle =
the
nearly triple amount of English literacy/civics funds the state =
received on
July 1, 2001. The California Department of Education (CDE) kept the
competition for those funds on hold. Then CDE negotiated a budget =
supporting
staff to manage new grants funded by the hefty EL/Civics increase. See

Demos Share
Key Strategies
Twelve English literacy/civics (EL/Civics) projects funded with FY 1999
National Leadership funds convened here January 24-25 to share what =
they
learned and plan for the future. Joining in were interested others =
including
state directors of states where demonstration projects operate, =
education
groups, and OVAE staff. Proceedings were documented and will be shared.
Direct grants from OVAE no longer are available. The 12 programs now =
are
expected to apply for English literacy/civics funds their state =
education
agencies receive as part of the adult education state grant program.

Molly Maid?
Molly Maid teams up with the North Carolina Community College system to
offer English literacy, life skills and GED classes to employees of its
Chapel Hill franchise. It's an effort to increase job retention and =
grow the
company. Molly Maid is a cleaning service with 210 franchises. They =
employ
mostly Spanish-speaking single mothers. In its Chapel Hill pilot =
program,
Molly Maid provides classroom space and pays employees for class time.
Franchisee Mary Dickinson says the classes are an important part of =
what
keeps employees working for the company. When employees do leave, they
recruit replacements for themselves based on positive experience with =
Molly
Maid. Contact <mailto:boyerd at nccs.cc.nc.us>
