NLA Colleagues:

Here is the Advocacy Honor Roll for those who in November and December
sent faxes to their Senators, made follow-up phone calls, and sent
letters to the Secretaries of Education, Labor and Health and Human
services concerning the National Institute for Literacy. This Senate
effort followed a similar one we undertook in the House, and in both
cases we had a significant impact on our legislators. We have laid good
groundwork.

I wish I could say that the need for action is now over, that our work
is done. But it has only just begun. As Jon Randall has pointed out,
there are several important efforts we need to make this year as adult
literacy education resources at national and state levels, are threatened.

For now, let’s recognize and appreciate the efforts of those who have
taken action on behalf of adult literacy. Their names are below Jon’s
message. If I have inadvertently left someone out, please let me know,
and let me know if corrections are needed. I will update this, as needed.

Our goal was to secure 30 co-signers and we delivered 29! I wouldn't let
on, but I had my doubts we'd do this well. Thanks to everyone who wrote
letters and made calls!

Congratulations and a star on the NIFL Senate Letter Honor Roll to
advocates who got their Senator to co-sign the letters to Secretaries
Paige, Thompson, and Chao.

Advocates from the following states deserve two stars on the Honor Roll:
NY, CT, RI, MA, NM, ME, and SD. A big CONGRATULATIONS to you! You
delivered BOTH of your Senators.

With the results of the NIFL letter campaigns in the House and Senate,
we now have a roster of who our friends are - with whom we've either
newly cultivated or renewed our connections. This will serve us well in
the coming months.

Way to go everyone!
