OK, I forgot another category.

4)  The program changed. (And clients left)  

If I switch  the term from "student" to "client," which may be more accurate, 
then leaving makes sense.  "Student" implies mandated attendance, as in k-12, 
one of Art's points.  "Client" implies that the service is no longer 
satisfactory (the arborist cut down the tree instead of fertilizing and 
pruning it).
