George,

As the discussion goes forward I begin to think of other ways to 
conceptualize what we are talking about.

I would still ABSOLUTELY keep methodology in the center.  I WOULD ALSO put 
"supporting conditions" in as variables (maybe we know something about them, 
maybe only a little, this is a puzzle, remember).  Peter's addition of 
teaching as artistry would be a supporting condition--teacher experience.

I once heard Jenny Horsman talk about teaching women whose learning was 
compromised by violence, and thinking that what she was as a teacher was so 
much more than what she could put in a book.  But she has been teaching for 
many years, and her experience must have refined her teaching skill.

Because more is written about emergent literacy as children's literacy, and 
not adult literacy, I have studied a lot here, and I think there is a lot 
that is useful here.  "Scribing" techniques started being mentioned in 
children's literacy, as far as I know.
