Janet,

I am with you on this one.  We Americans are nuts over self-help.  Want to 
have a garden?  Buy a book.  Only problem (I have not thought this through 
completely) is that gardening books take reading skills.  Anyway, your point 
still stands.  We need to regularize reading and writing for adults, include 
it in the culture the way we include other self-improvements.*  Or home 
improvements, for heaven's sake.  I dream of a Home Depot for readers and 
writers....
