Colleagues, Don Block's comments on the lack of more hoopla over the
increases in Adult Education and Literacy are timely. The fact is we do not
always recognize the efforts of others (funders) or the gains we make through
our advocacy. We are better at whining and moaning about how little adult
education is appreciated. In fact, we are so busy complaining about the
inequity in our funding that we often neutralize our own advocacy efforts.
There are many reasons why policy makers are reluctant to give adult
education /literacy funding a higher priority. The data to support increases
and new funding initiatives are often lacking. Let's not forget the millions
of $$$ that are poured into k-12 education, special education, vocational
education, etc...
What we need to do better is to make a stronger case for lifelong
learning...Someone has already suggested it on this list...Adult education
needs to be an equal partner with k-12. and other education levels. It ought
not just be viewed as a remedial program..Just my thoughts. Jay cretella
