[NLA] Legislative victory for adult literacy

Colleagues, Don Block's comments on the lack of more hoopla over the 
increases in Adult Education and Literacy are timely. The fact is we do not 
always recognize the efforts of others (funders) or the gains we make through 
our advocacy. We are better at whining and moaning about how little adult 
education is appreciated. In fact, we are so busy complaining about the 
inequity in our funding that we often neutralize our own advocacy efforts.
There are many reasons why policy makers are reluctant to give adult 
education /literacy funding a higher priority. The data to support increases 
and new funding initiatives are often lacking. Let's not forget the millions 
of $$$ that are poured into k-12 education, special education, vocational 
education, etc...
What we need to do better is to make a stronger case for lifelong 
learning...Someone has already suggested it on this list...Adult education 
needs to be an equal partner with k-12. and other education levels. It ought 
not just be viewed as a remedial program..Just my thoughts. Jay cretella
