George,
The use of "return on investment in democracy" is perfectly valid, though I
may not be putting it well. This demonization of the idea of capitalism is
absurd. I am not talking about huge faceless corporations gobbling up
resources and devouring people, either, and it doesn't sound as though Tom
is. "Democracy" and "capitalism" are not opposite poles of anything. It is
perfectly possible to invest in democracy--time, labor, love, what have you.
Adult literacy can surely be thought of this way. This is just a
conversational straw dog to get the juices flowing, and it would be nice to
read something interesting, novel, sensible written on this topic to forward
our thinking.
