NLA Colleagues,
The administrator of the Literacytent, where the NLA list is housed,
sent this advice, which I am passing on to you:
"As you have probably heard by now, there is yet another nasty e-mail
virus making the rounds. It exploits the same security holes as most of
the recent ones, and affects only users of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook
Express for Windows." [He is referring to the Goner worm]
"Users must be especially careful when sending mail to or receiving mail
from a mailing list. The virii do not affect the mailing list manager
or
the server, but they do pass through to subscribers, some of whom may be
vulnerable."
"... please advise your list subscribers that they need to do the following:
- Configure their mail readers NOT to open/execute email attachments, if
they haven't already, and
- Get antivirus software for their own PCs if they want added protection.
Combatting virii is as much a social issue as a technical one.
Misconfigured email programs are the cause for virtually all virus
exploits. Microsoft has made the unfortunate error of shipping earlier
versions of Outlook and Outlook Express configured to automatically trust
and execute all attached content. Users of these products should contact
Microsoft for support and solutions."
