Matthew --
Both the National Institute for Literacy's website and LINCS should be able
to help as you plan your presentation. I'm e-mailing this to the NLA list
instead of you directly since there may be others who are not aware that
general information on literacy and specific information about health and
literacy are readily available.
A fact sheet on the national literacy delivery system with information on
both funding and structure is online at:
http://www.nifl.gov/newworld/DELIVERY.HTM. The data is from 1999 and is in
the process of being updated.
"Fast Facts on Literacy" has data and statistics related to literacy:
http://www.nifl.gov/newworld/FASTFACT.HTM
A fact sheet on literacy and health is available at:
http://www.nifl.gov/newworld/HEALTH.HTM
Three NIFL fellowship reports related to health and literacy, including
"Empowerment Health Education in Adult Literacy: A Guide for Public Health
Education in Adult Literacy Practitioners, Policy Makers and Funders" are
online at: http://www.nifl.gov/nifl/nifl_pubs.htmlLINCS
LINCS has a special collection devoted to health and literacy issues --
including information about the link between literacy and health, links to
organizations dedicated to health and literacy education, and resources that
provide basic health information in simple language
-- at:
http://www.worlded.org/us/health/lincs/
The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on NIFL's website
(http://www.nifl.gov/nifl/faqs.htmlhas) answers basic questions about
literacy, such as:
What is literacy?
How is adult literacy measured?
How literate is the adult population?
Where can I find out about literacy rates in my area?
Good luck!

Subject: [NLA] Adult Education Presentation
Hello,
I'm scheduled to present for 15 minutes on adult education to an audience
of health care practitioners. Some of the practitioners don't know
anything about adult education. Has anyone developed a presentation
(preferably on PowerPoint) that explains the national adult education
system to someone who doesn't know anything about it? The specific
questions I'm supposed to address are funding, structures, and how adult ed
is different from K-12.
Thank you for any help you can offer.
Peace,
Matthew Scelza
