When I was growing up, public libraries were places to be quiet and to
read books. The loudest acceptable sound was the swish of pages being
turned. Other noises brought stern looks and hissed "ssssshhhhh"s from
the librarian.
Things are different now. Many libraries are hubs for locating and
using paper, audio -visual, and computer resources. And they are places
where adult English language learners can go for assistance and
information and to help them learn the language.
"Library Literacy Programs for English Language Learners" summarizes the
history of public libraries and library literacy programs; describes
current delivery models; and discusses initiatives in library literacy,
profiling one successful public library program that serves adult
English language learners and their families. This digest highlights
successful programs for English language learners at the Arlington
County Public Library in Arlington, Virginia.
Second Language Acquisition

Have you been searching for information on second language acquisition
(SLA) research that addresses adult English language learners,
specifically in non-academic settings? Do you want to know, for
instance, whether or not error correction is useful? Are you curious
about the chances of helping your older learners improve their
pronunciation in English, as well as increasing their vocabularies?
Although we can't promise definitive answers to these questions, we can
assure you that they are addressed in our new publication. NCLE staff
member Dora Johnson has compiled an annotated bibliography of reports
and articles in the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC)
database that address SLA issues for adult populations.
