Dear David,
Don't apologize for the research or laud what k-12 does. I worked with a
Principal in a middle school in Boston once and opened his mail and read the
research articles and condensed the ones that seemed good and handed them on.
It would have taken a magician to implement the good research, 700 kids, the
problems were how to get more money so we could reduce class size, security
(knives), and ordering textbooks. Very bright very committed teachers could
get through to the kids and make things happen, there were some.
I also went back to visit classes in a private school where I had taught. I
saw state of the art literacy teaching in a third grade, a guy who had read
all the research, had magnificent training, and was in a setting where he
could flourish.
I am trying to say that there is tremendous variability in k-12, I could cite
other examples, there are a lot of variables to control.
Whatever Kegan is up to will be tested and tried and if it is good it will
last.
Andrea
