<P>Great response, Eileen! I agree wholeheartedly - in addition to needing cash, youth learners need fun & excitement, and the opportunity to express. The Theatre of the Oppressed is a wonderful concept - let's keep these ideas afloat. </P>

<DIV></DIV>>Any effort to increase educational attainment for LEP and/or at-risk
<DIV></DIV>>youth needs to address (or rather, help them address) their unique
<DIV></DIV>>issues--questions of identity, their place in the world, making a
<DIV></DIV>>future for themselves where no one they know has gone before. I'd
<DIV></DIV>>encourage everyone to listen to Lucia Lopez's story on the website
<DIV></DIV>>for This American Life (you can find it through WBEZ in Chicago's
<DIV></DIV>>website). It was on last week's show, "What are you looking at?" The
<DIV></DIV>>story makes a very good case for including theatre and the arts in
<DIV></DIV>>education for youth. And the the Pedagogy and Theatre of the
<DIV></DIV>>Oppressed organization and annual conference based on the work of
<DIV></DIV>>Paolo Friere and Augosto Boal is a forum for ongoing development of
<DIV></DIV>>"educational" theatre with a goal of personal and social
<DIV></DIV>>transformation.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Whatever happens, it needs to provide a mirror for the learner to
<DIV></DIV>>see and further create her/himself in dialogue with others, it needs
<DIV></DIV>>to respect and nurture their burgeoning autonomy, and it needs to be
<DIV></DIV>>fun! Adults tolerate too much boredom in pursuit of what's "good"
<DIV></DIV>>for us. I've seen quite a few kids in ABE/GED and ESL classes, and
<DIV></DIV>>I've seen quite a few backsides on the way out the door--not from
<DIV></DIV>><MY> classes of course ;)--and they generally don't put up with
<DIV></DIV>>what's boring.

<DIV></DIV>>>Hey Tom: I am strongly advocating the incorporation of public
<DIV></DIV>>>health into education at all levels from k-12 to adult literacy and
<DIV></DIV>>>the collaboration between public health educators, teachers and
<DIV></DIV>>>other representatives of both fields towards this goal. I have
<DIV></DIV>>>presented arguments in favor of this at the HHS Office of Minority
<DIV></DIV>>>Health Conference and I have just received a grant form pfizer to
<DIV></DIV>>>explore this idea and train teachers and health educators in
<DIV></DIV>>>several communities. This is something that I would advocate and
<DIV></DIV>>>push for. HHS and some state adult ed departments have expressed an
<DIV></DIV>>>interest in this idea, but there is no serious investment in this
<DIV></DIV>>>effort yet. If you need more details or info about this effort, let
<DIV></DIV>>>me know.
