<DIV>Nancy has a point. One of the results stemming from a fragmented, un-unified "system" is a general failure of the "mainstream" public adult ed programs to recognize and learn from the track record and innovations of the private, community-based programs. And the CBO's need to stop thinking of all "public" programs as fierce protectors of the status quo (although they often are), while the larger public system needs to stop thinking of all the CBO's as Mom-and-Pop fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants rinky-dink operations, (although we often are). There is excellence in both, but we seldom even speak to one another (thank goodness for these lists!). If we could just come to some agreement on what a good program looks like and acts like, we could police our own house. I think the learners have the answer to that. If one good thing comes from the NRS, I hope it is the realization that in the face of what begins to look like a "common enemy", we can begin to deal with one another and move forward together. David Rosen, our moderator, is always asking us to focus our discussion on POLICY. How about a policy that would establish an accreditation program, one that places adult learners at the center of identifying quality? Proliteracy Worldwide has been working on this for some time. Does anyone know if representatives from the "public system" are involved with them? If not, why not?</DIV></DIV>
