Parks as Classrooms, uses National Parks as
resources for educators. PAC is a complete program with specialists in cultural,
historical and/or natural history. Information about it can be found on the NPS
website. Just choose the National Park or historic site nearest you. I've found
Rangers to be great educators which students really respond to. Service projects
of habitat rehabilitation with middle school and high school age folks work well
as they did on Crissey Field in the San Francisco Bay Area. Also the
Exploratorium Museum for Science, Art and Perception has free materials for all
ages. You won't have to reinvent the wheel but, to avoid doing so continue to do
what you are doing (as Andres suggests)and ask for guidance. Also, read the
conversation between Myles Horton and Paulo Freire for edification and perhaps a
metacognitive moment.
