[NLA] Important Info: NLA List coming to a close

NLA Colleagues,

I founded the NLA electronic list ten years ago as a way to build a
national adult literacy advocacy community. During this decade I have
watched the membership grow to nearly 750 subscribers, and have been
pleased to see many members become more active literacy advocates in
their communities, their states and nationally. I have become a more
active and knowledgeable advocate in my state, and nationally, in part
through being a member of the NLA list.

It is time now for some changes. After 17 years, this summer or fall
I will be leaving my position as Director of Boston's Adult Literacy
Resource Institute. I plan to expand my work as an independent
consultant providing program and staff development and program
evaluation services for adult education and out-of-school young adult
programs. To make time for this new work I need to reduce my many
volunteer hours. Unfortunately, moderating the NLA list is one of the
activities which must go.

I will close the NLA list in April. This will provide time for an
alternative (or alternatives) to replace it.

The NLA list is currently archived at
http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/discussions/nifl-nla/nla.html and at
http://lists.literacytent.org/pipermail/nla/

I hope that both the National Institute for Literacy LINCS and the
Literacy Tent can continue to maintain the NLA archives.

I want to make clear, especially given all that is happening now, that
just as creating the NLA list was my personal decision (inspired by Paul
Jurmo) closing it is also my personal decision and is not a result of
outside influences. Because a national electronic discussion forum on
adult literacy public policy is needed, others will step forward to make
this to happen.

I want to thank those who, over the years, have made extraordinarily
thoughtful contributions to the NLA list. Through these postings I have
come to know, respect and learn from many people, some of whom I have
not yet had the pleasure to meet in person. I hope that opportunity
will arise in the years ahead. In any case, we are sure to see each
other online in other adult literacy education forums.

All the best

David J. Rosen
