I am still surprised by the relative silence concerning what is going on in Congress concerning NIFL and the NIFL advisory board minutes. Have we given up? Are we feeling hopeless? Is there nothing we can do?
I am very naive when it comes to congressional matters, however, I have the following idea regarding the NIFL Board: How about contacting individual members and sharing our concerns about their minutes?
I am guessing that the minutes are of public record and that is why we saw a copy of them. If they are of public record, does this not mean that we should be able to react to someone official? Are NIFL advisory board members able to be contacted? Is there a mechanism by which we can send them emails/voice mails/faxes/etc? If not, is there a point person that we can contact who can share our concerns?
Since I know someone on the Board, I plan on contacting him and sharing the following:
1. Literacy is more than reading
2. Adult literacy students and their teachers need more than a reading focus (that is why all of NIFL's initiatives are important).
3. The adult reading research network is ONLY one group of researchers-NIFL needs to encourage ALL adult literacy researchers who are interested to gather in networks.
Do any of you know any of the Board members? Can you contact him/her?
My guess is that if other Board members are like the one that I know, they are hungry for our input, realizing that they are not experts in adult literacy and need input from us!
What do people think?
Daphne
One thought that I have is to approach the NIFL advisory board members.
