Hi Folks: Sorry for not having reviewed my mail at this address in some time, but I've come across the thread begun with Daphne's question and have a few thoughts. First, I haven't seen anyone ask why your dean wants to change the name of your organization. I'm curious to know what her or his motives are. Second, I agree with those who have suggested retaining the word Adult in the title, for the larger purpose of defending the position of adult education under a federal administration which would do it in. Third, all of the various proposals which aim to suggest a lifelong process incorporating various growth stages (including yours and your Dean's, Daphne) are overly complex: a center for literacy which is not age-specific is simply a Center for Literacy.

A Center for the Study of Adult Literacy focuses specifically on Literacy development among adults. Does the dean's intention to change the name of the Center mean that the dean also means to change the center's focus or mission?

Sorry for being behind,

David Hayes
