[NLA] Why so much interest in adult reading?

The reading orthodoxy of phonemic awareness and other such concepts parallels
exactly the language being used in K-12 reading policy, where all this began,
and has been actively propagated by Reid Lyon of the National Institute for
Child Health and Development (NICHD--the title might be slightly wrong, but
the initials are correct) which is part of the National Institute for Health.
I'm not sure how he got to be such an important voice for reading research,
but I'm sure there's information on that from progressive reading researchers
in K-12. It does seem that the position of the NICHD and the National
Reading Panel are very similar--two of the most important platforms for
propagating information on reading research in K-12. For a different
perspective on all this, try "Big Brother and the National Reading
Curriculum: How Ideology Trumped Evidence" by Richard Allington. I haven't
read it, but it looks like it would help educate us about where all this
coming from.
