[NLA] Info: Focus, please

NLA Colleagues,

I realize that some NLA postings recently have aggravated subscribers.
Some have e-mailed me, some have posted to the list, some have just
unsubscribed.

I would like to step as moderator and urge those who post to consider that:

1. Irony and sarcasm are often not understood, or just create heat, not
light. I recommend against messages with irony or sarcasm on electronic
lists -- the medium does not accommodate them well.

2. The NLA list is among the most active (is it the >most< active?)
adult literacy education electronic list. That has pluses and minuses.
If you want to discuss a public policy-related idea, please >do< discuss
it on this list. But if you want to discuss other issues raised in
someone's message, or the style of the message, please e-mail the
individual (not the nearly 700 people on the NLA list) and discuss it
off-line. Many subscribers now get 500 or more e-mail messages a week.
That's a lot to sort through. Please be courteous -- post messages which
follow the guidelines of this list. I will post them in my next message.

3. I am not trying to discourage discussion -- indeed it would be
refreshing to see some new people posting messages -- just trying (like
a pilot in a storm) to keep the list on course.
