NLA Colleagues,
I went to the Website which has the the results of the student survey
that Harry Seda did. I found the findings quite interesting. The focus
of the survey is student use of technology, but Harry also asks
questions about student leadership, work, and public assistance. The
survey found that most students are interested in using computers, and
many are interested in using the Internet. For those who believe the
digital divide has been bridged, however, here is chilling evidence that
many adult literacy students want to get there, but access to the
technology is a hope, not yet a reality.
Consider these findings:
N = 285 students (from 35 programs in 15 states)
• 69.5% of respondents said they would like to learn to use a computer
• 94.1% said they do not have access to a computer at their program
• 92.6% said they do not have access to a computer at home; 86.3% of
these said they would like to learn to use a computer anyway
• There were several questions about using computers to make reading and
writing easier (voice recognition, easy typing, help with correcting
spelling and grammar) which a majority of those who responded said
they were interested in.
Thanks, Harry. I hope your findings get serious consideration from
education decision makers at all levels: national, state, local, and
program.
