Dear Friends: Today I emailed out copies of my summary of Leading from the
Middle to 25 subscribers. I hope this will spark some specific discussion
about its recommendations. I went to a fair amount of trouble to do this
as the document has so much to say about advocacy, particularly about what
could be done in our local and state neighborhoods. Too often, we seem to
focus on only Congress (although of course, this list is a national forum
and rightfully so.) However, one of the things I struggle with is making
decisions about which issues I should address at the local/state level and
which belong to national. I have read nothing else that is more helpful in
this regard than this report. I hope those who read the summary will go on
to read the entire report--it deserves your full and considered attention.
I also encourage you to use the summary and/or the report in any way you
think best to disseminate it. I'm giving the summary to my Board, and to a
list of policymakers and funders.

The full document can be read and downloaded at the CAAL website,
www.caalusa.org.

By the way, Forrest P. Chisman, the author, and the Council for the
Advancement of Adult Literacy, should be congratulated. Best, Debbie
