[NLA] in praise of big brother at the DOE

It's about time someone culled the enormous amount of information available
through the Department of Education! I live in fear of committing
educational malpractice by using my own knowledge, experience, and judgment
to interpret the information I find. What if I don't place the same emphasis
on phonemic awareness as the new keepers of the literacy gates, the proposed
NIFL Board? I know I need someone to tell me what to do and what to
think--I'm glad we've finally got a good old-fashioned elite willing to
exercise noblesse oblige by acting with authority.
You know, this is great for the female-dominated field of adult literacy. I
could tell, with all that thinking and sorting through of too much available
information, my brain was swelling and my reproductive organs were shrinking
(just as the Victorians thought!), and the same was probably happening to
all those other unnatural, uppity women. Now maybe the process will begin to
reverse--I feel more fertile already! Thanks, big brother!
