I too have heard the rumor that the new NIFL director position is a done
deal. I did some checking today and have concluded the following ...
1. It is most likely true that there is a short list (1-2 names) being
considered by the Administration for the NIFL director position
2. To my knowledge, no SELECTION has been made - one of the folks on the
short list indicates he hasn't been offered the position
Therefore, I recommend that folks press on with the Dear Colleague letter
effort in the House with a sense of urgency. It is important that the
literacy field get as many of their Congresspersons as possible to sign the
Sawyer/Walsh letter to Secretaries Paige, Chao, and Thompson AND send each
of the Secretaries a copy of your letter to your Congressperson.
We have just one more week to conclude the sign-on effort in the House.
Signatures will be gathered on Monday 9/30, so work now to get your
Congressperson to sign on (faxed letter and follow-up phone call).
If you get voice mail for your Congressperson's education staffer, in
addition to your name and phone number say:
"I'm following up on a letter I faxed on [date] urging your boss to sign the
Sawyer/Walsh letter re: the National Institute for Literacy. Please sign on
by Friday. Thank you."
If you don't get a call back, call again the next day. (The best time to
reach staff members is usually 4:30 - 6:00 PM, Eastern Time.)
I'll post a list of signatures to date as soon as I get it.
Thanks for your work on this matter! Keep the faxes and phone calls coming!
