Help Needed: One Senate Republican!

The alert posted earlier today (Urgent Action: Help Preserve NIFL's Adult Ed
Focus!) could have been posted ten days ago except for one problem. To
launch this effort, we need one Democrat and one Republican in the House and
one Democrat and one Republican in the Senate to take the lead on these
letters.

To date, we haven't been able to secure the lead Republican co-sponsor for
the letter in the Senate. We just couldn't wait any longer and posted the
alert for the House letter only. Senator John Breaux (LA) has agreed to be
the lead Democrat co-sponsor of the Senate letter - identical to the House
letter. But we need a Republican too!

The lead co-sponsors are the ones that ask their fellow Senators to sign the
letter and collect the actual signatures. It requires a commitment of some
staff work to be a lead co-sponsor. Getting Republicans in the Senate to
sign on should be easier, but first we need ONE to agree to be the letter's
cosponsor with Senator Breaux.

Anyone personally know someone in the office of a Republican Senator?

We've made requests to the following: Republican Senators Frist (TN),
Specter (PA), and McCain (AZ). Senator Thompson (TN) said he'd likely sign
the letter but not take the lead on it. We've sent new requests Senators
Collins (ME) and DeWine (OH). If you have connections in any of these
offices feel free to follow up on requests that have already been made by
fellow constituents on behalf of the National Coalition for Literacy.

Or, email me directly if you have a connection to a Republican Senator we
haven't asked yet.
