Art,

I agree that Krashen sets up an either/or situation.  I think that ideologues 
on either side of the divide have a habit of  doing this, it may be amusing 
for some, but I think it obscures the real work of real teachers such as 
yourself.

My job requires that I look at ideological stances, so I was delighted to 
find this reference on the ESL list.  In fact, I am now reviewing Yetta 
Goodman's "Reading Miscue Inventory," 1987, and the Goodmans have been seen 
as the promulgators of whole language.  It's good stuff, you would recognize 
this approach, and I think any person who advocates for phonemic awareness 
without self-education about the Goodman's approach is barking up the wrong 
tree.
