Colleagues,

i think you have to look at the total immersion factor which I don't see 
anyone going for these days, but who knows.  In total immersion you are with 
the same totally immersed people all the time, being totally immersed is what 
you do, what you all are.  This also enhances a "cohort effect" I should 
imagine and promotes good group feeling, and a peer structure that changes 
the norms of the group, from being low literate in the wider society to being 
one among a society of fellows.

i think it was Coleman, in the Coleman Report (?) who said that high school 
students would learn just fine if put in boarding schools.

I think there is a lot to be said for immersion, who would do it?  The Army 
is one reasonable answer.
