Earlier this evening Andrea asked for some phrases to use in letters to
Senators urging them to contact the offices of Senators Breaux or Hatch to
co-sign the NIFL letter to Secretaries Paige, Thompson, and Chao ...
I urge everyone to get something out fast and not to worry about saying
things in different ways to different offices. In fact, copy the *exact same
letter* you sent to your Congressperson - change only the salutation, the
inside address, and the names of the NIFL letter co-sponsors in the Senate
and their staff contact persons. The same letter is fine for all three
lawmakers, your Congressperson and booth of your Senators. Your letter only
looses value if a single policy-maker gets exactly the same letter from
multiple constituents - each office though doesn't compare your letter with
those you send to other policy-makers.
For those who didn't send a letter to your Congressperson in September, feel
free to model your letters after the sample that's in the alert.
Sorry to provide support different than that you requested, Andrea.
Time is of the essence ... The Senate plans to adjourn late Thursday or
Friday. When they leave town, we're out of time. I urge everyone to get
something to each of your Senators ASAP and make follow-up phone calls to
them until they agree to cosign the Breaux-Hatch letter. A copy of the
letter you're asking them to sign is included at the end of the alert,
miss-labeled TEXT OF THE HOUSE LETTER. (As you probably guessed, it's the
Senate letter text.) When you call the legislative assistants for education
for each of your two Senators, offer to fax or email the text to them if
they haven't seen it yet. That may help speed up the approval process in
their offices.
Best,
Jon
