I may be too tired for this, Catherine, but here goes.

In my mind Tom was simply inquiring the meaning of words and how to test the 
assumptions therein.  He couldn't find a way to test them, and as I thought 
about it, I couldn't either, so I agreed with him.  Maybe he was thinking in 
terms of statistics, I don't know, but I wasn't, I am a word person.  I 
wasn't thinking on any higher level than that, just the words on the page and 
what I could do with them, or not.
