Dear Tom,
I can see how the WomenLit discussion might seem odd. I can only comment on
a tiny corner of Daphne's work. Often those who have experienced sexual
abuse develop PTSD which in turn can inhibit learning. Horsman's "Too Scared
To Learn" is useful to read in this context. I will soon be finishing up
some writing on this topic myself, helped in part by contributors to the
WomenLit list.
For me the subjects raised on WomenLit have been a not always comfortable
revelation. But there are many contributors who feel comfortable in talking
about sexual issues and identity and how they influence classroom learning.
These discussions have given me support in moving ahead professionally with,
I must say a greater appreciation for horrified reactions when questions of
sexual identity and experience are raised in professional groups, even
professional groups of adult literacy educators.
No simple answers. Thanks for bringing up some questions, though.
Andrea
