Deborah et al,

Thank you for your interest in the National Alliance of Urban Literacy
Coalitions (NAULC).   It is open to organizations that represent multiple
and diverse adult and/or family literacy service providers.  Not all such
organizations are technically coalitions with memberships in a traditional
sense, for example the Literacy Assistance Center in NYC and the Boston
Adult Literacy Fund are members.  "Urban" is really in the eye of the
beholder.  When NAULC first began we thought about limiting membership to
cities over 250,000, but have since decided that if a group felt they had
enough in common with our members and we had enough to offer them, plus if
they had a city name to be identified by, membership was appropriate.
LaCrosse, WI with a population of 50,000 is one such smaller city.
Membership dues are $25.  I think that addresses your specific questions.

I would be interested in learning more from Michael Hirschorn about the
Natl. Association of Urban Literacy Centers.  Is membership open only to
"Coalitions", what is meant by "urban", cost to join, services provided,
etc.  I post this to NLA in case others may also wonder.  Thanks
