CAAL Publication - Federal Role 2002Thanks to Gail for calling our attention
to CAAL's good work in compiling this information!  In addition to funding
for AmeriCorps VISTA from the Corporation for National Service there is the
regular AmeriCorps funding.  The National Alliance of Urban Literacy
Coalitions has a $2,000,000 National Direct grant for its
Literacy*AmeriCorps program, which deploys 150 AmeriCorps members to
coalitions in five cities.  Members are then distributed to service
providers in each city.  Their duties include instruction and tutoring as
well as volunteer coordination and volunteer and student recruitment.  There
are many other literacy programs that have AmeriCorps members from
state-funded AmeriCorps programs as well.

  CAAL has just published the Federal Role in Adult Literacy: FY2002, a
compilation of federal programs from which funding for adult education and
literacy may be available.  The work, CAAL Bulletin Issue #1, was compiled
by CAAL Board Member Garrett Murphy with assistance from Bess Heitner.  The
