Regarding last night's response from Jon Randall, Nat'l Coalition for Literacy:
Thank you, Jon, for responding to my inquiry.
You hit upon the exact reason why I asked about what "the loud voices" will say. Plus you added *who* those "loud voices" will *be*. AND added as well: Contact your individual elected officials. Even though none of S.D.'s are listed in the committee structure, I realize that there is some impact that our Sen. Daschle can add to the discussion. And, from past conversations with his staff, *will* add when it comes to discussion about education funding needs here. I will make the commitment to call Sen. Daschle's office and pass on my feelings regarding the issue at hand.
I'd also like to challenge those listserv "lurkers" out there who recognize an elected official from their state on this appropriations committee to "get personal" with them and call, fax or write them regarding your program and the important, critical services provided voters in his/her state. This could be called "unifying input from the system" if everyone takes responsibility for their own individual Charge to Commit.
Together we truly CAN make a difference in at least the vision of what adult literacy and education can and *should* be for our citizenry.

Earlier today, Nancy asked ...
"What direction do you see Mr. Regula's constituents' 'disproportionately loud voices on this issue' take?"
Nancy,
I'm hopeful that advocates in literacy programs in Mr. Regula's district can urge the House Appropriations Subcommittee chair to increase funding for WIA Title II State Grants, despite the President's call for level funding and the current budget situation.
While they are very important, so too are literacy advocates in the districts of other members of the House and Senate Appropriations subcommittees -- and House and Senate leaders, like Sen. Daschle. The voices of literacy advocates in South Dakota have been and will continue to be "disproportionately loud" too. Thanks for all you're doing!
